Come and join us on a guided tour of a working distillery in Galway this August.

How would you like to experience what it has been like to make poitin for 170 years as part of an Irish language tour with Gaeltacht an Eachréidh and An Bruach Thoir?

Take a deep dive into the history of poitin-making in Conamara with an expert from Micil Distillery in Salthill and sample three products with us on Friday, August 22.

This one hour Irish language tour, with a native speaker from Conamara, will tell us the story of how Pádraic Ó Griallais turned an illicit family business into a thriving “legitimate” business based in Salthill today.

The tour shows that whiskey and poitin were essentially the same spirit, the difference between them being the purchasing of a licence which was not always in the culture of Conamara.

During this tour of between one hour and 90 minutes, we will learn how whiskey is made, and all about distilling, mash bills, cask finishes, and maturation. Pádraic’s family have been making whiskey, both legally and illegally, for 170 years.

Discover what makes Micil whiskey and poitin unique during a tour which involves three tastings in the working distillery. It’s a fun, interactive experience that’s a must-do for all whiskey lovers.

Places are limited to 25 persons and this tour is funded by the language planning officers of Gaeltacht an Eachreidh and An Bruach Thoir. Strictly over 18s, although children over 12 will be admitted if accompanied by an adult.
